“How long does it take to pass HSK 3, 4, or 5?”

📌 The part most people don’t realize
In university-style intensive programs, students study:
- 5 days a week
- 4 hours per day
With that intensity:
HSK 3 is guaranteed after 4 months (around 300 hours )
HSK 4 is realistic in 6 to 8 months
HSK 5 is possible in 11-14 months
These results come from disciplined students who engage in continuous and immersive studies of Chinese.
But most independent learners:
- Study 1–2 hours per week
- Learn alone
- Skip weeks
- Use fragmented materials
To give you an idea, my current online student’s two-year learning progress is equivalent to that of my previous immersive student’s six-week learning result. It is because some online students have an inconsistent learning pattern and do not spend enough time on Chinese each week.
Why HSK 4 → 5 feels so hard
Every experienced teacher agrees on this:
HSK 1–3 is smooth
HSK 4 → 5 is where many learners get stuck
Why?
- Vocabulary jumps sharply
- Sentence logic becomes more complex
- Written Chinese words were introduced in HSK5, while HSK 1-4 focus more on oral Chinese words and expressions.
It is also why many students:
- Pass HSK exams
- But still struggle to speak naturally
It’s not talent.
Its method and structure.
