THE MODAL COMPLEMENT is used to describe or evaluate the state of an action or behavior.

  •  Pattern one: Verb + 得(de) + adv. + adj.

 Example:

1. 你今天穿得很漂亮啊。

Nǐ jīntiān chuān de hěn piàoliang a .

“How often do you visit your parents?”

This is a very simple sentence in English but it could be tricky to translate it into Chinese. In Chinese language, we don’t have a question word for “how often”. Our secret four will show you the trick: THE COMPLEMENT OF FREQUENCY.

First, let’s see a simpler sentence: How many times have you been to China?

  • Pattern one: Subject + … + Verb + ( guò/le) + (pronoun) + number-measure word + ( noun)
